YMCA Camp Pelion
1924 – 2024
In 2024, our beloved YMCA summer camp is set to mark a momentous milestone – its 100th year of existence. For a century, this cherished place has been a sanctuary for countless young souls, offering them a haven of joy, learning, and unforgettable memories. Throughout its illustrious history, our summer camp has welcomed children from all corners of the globe, including refugees and individuals from vulnerable backgrounds. It has been a beacon of hope and a source of transformation for countless young hearts.
The hybrid phenomenon of a storm/ tropical cyclone named Daniel led to extremely heave rainfall and to subsequent floods in Central Greece. Unfortunately, our cherished campgrounds were overflooded by tons of water and mud, which left them in disarray and chaos.
The impact of this natural disaster has been profound, affecting not only the buildings and the equipment of our Camp, but also the spirit and resilience of the community it serves. Our mission has always been to provide a safe and nurturing environment for young individuals to learn, grow, and form lasting bonds. Now, more than ever, we are called upon to come together and rebuild the heart and soul of our YMCA community.
We invite you to stand with us in preserving the legacy of our YMCA Summer Camp in Pelion as it reaches this historic centenary milestone. Your contribution, whether through financial support, in-kind donations, or sharing of resources, will be crucial in bringing our summer camp back to life and reigniting the beacon of hope it represents for so many. Our goal extends beyond rebuilding; it is about safeguarding a century of memories, values, and traditions. Together, we can transform this moment of adversity into an opportunity to strengthen our commitment to youth empowerment and community building.
As we embark on this journey to restore our beloved camp, we invite you to join us in honoring its storied past and securing its vibrant future. Your contribution, no matter the size, will be a testament to the enduring spirit of partnership and shared values!
Thank you for your unwavering support and commitment to our shared mission!

Restoring Our Beloved Camp After Nature’s Fury
Introduction
The hybrid phenomenon of a storm/ tropical cyclone named Daniel led to extremely heavy rainfall and to subsequent floods in Central Greece. Unfortunately, our cherished campgrounds were overflooded by tons of water and mud, which left them in disarray and chaos.
Our cherished camp, a sanctuary of dreams and shared adventures, now stands weathered and wounded. It is here, in this hallowed ground that we gather with hearts heavy yet determined, to breathe life back into the soul of our community. Now, facing the aftermath of this natural disaster, we must unite in a concerted effort to restore and rebuild.
The Heartbeat of our Camp
For a century, this cherished place has been a sanctuary for countless young souls, offering them a haven of joy, learning, and unforgettable memories. Throughout its illustrious history, our summer camp has welcomed children from all corners of the globe, including refugees and individuals from vulnerable backgrounds. It has been a beacon of hope and a source of transformation for countless young hearts.
This camp is where dreams took flight, and for many, it’s akin to a second home. This camp holds a special place in the hearts of many, and it is our duty to ensure that it stands tall once again.
The Embrace of Loss
As the tempest roared through, it left behind a trail of shattered dreams and fractured memories. Cabins, once warm and inviting, now stand battered and in disrepair. The theater, where laughter and stories echoed, now lies in ruins. The dining area, once a haven of shared meals and mirth, now stands in solemn silence. Our canoes and kayaks, which once glided gracefully across the sea, now lay twisted and broken. The pain is deep, but it’s a testament to the love we hold for this sacred place.
The heart-wrenching reality is that our camp, once a beacon of light, now sits in desolation.
The Urgent Need for Restoration
The very spirit that animated it cries out for revival. It calls on us to band together, to summon the strength within, and to rebuild this heaven of hopes and memories.
Our commitment to restoration is a pledge to future generations, that they too may know the magic of this place.
The Blueprint for Restoration
The first shocking image after the consequences of this catastrophic event, is the destruction of our facilities, not just in its buildings and equipment but to its natural environment. Our campsite has suffered a great deal of damage to its infrastructure, specifically in housing and office equipment, tools, and various other materials and goods. Buildings have undergone completely and some face partial destruction.
The estimation of these damages (loss of equipment, furniture and program goods) goes up to 155.544€ taking into account invoices and receipts of the last decade.
Part of the damaged equipment and material is described below for potential interest in sponsorship or kind donations by individuals, organizations, or companies.

Message from our President
September 2023.
One more summer comes to an end – 99 yeas of YMCA Camp Pelion – one step closer before our beloved camp reaches this historic centenary milestone. All kids are heading back home filled with joy, love, new friendships, and a promise; next year we meet again!
Together we will write history as our camp is set to mark its 100th year of existence. We will sing again, all together, under the trees and around the campfire.
Our camp is being tidied up as it does every fall. This year with more accuracy and in a more detail way. What’s missing, what is needed, what needs to be fixed and what is left, before we start planning the biggest events of all time; our 100th year of existence!
Everyone’s mind, young and old, is at the celebration.
Everything should be in place and ready to receive our new hundreds of campers, from across the globe. Everything is set!
But, in early September 2023, the hybrid phenomenon of a storm/ tropical cyclone named Daniel led to extremely heave rainfall and to subsequent floods in Central Greece. Disasters in the region were enormous; extreme floods, roads, buildings, and both bridges were collapsed.
Mavroutsa river swelled and swept away walls, logs, bricks which led to the falling and total collapse of the ring road of Ai Giannis. Nature took its revenge.
For 3 days the camp had no damage, but in the end, this storm, led to an extreme disaster; our cherished campgrounds were overflooded by tons of water and mud, which left them in disarray and chaos.
Within 2-3 hours the catastrophic weather conditions and subsequent flood wreaked havoc on our campgrounds the disaster to our campgrounds. Our buildings, our equipment, our facilities and all of our networks led to this enormous disaster that reaches 1 million € !
The anniversary year; 2024, is about to become an absolute nightmare.
We need to rebuild our camp, so we can welcome our campers the upcoming year.
Our so, our journey begins. We hired experts and professionals, guided by love for our camp, to assess the damage and issue all necessary reports. We created a plan to restore and rebuild our campground and our facilities.
We won’t give up!
We will fight!
We will do everything that is in our power!
We will bring life back into our camp, rekindling its flame for generations to come!
We will turn the page from loss to triumph!
We will raise the necessary amount that is needed, and we will make our camp in Pelion, even more beautiful than it was before!
We owe it to our Camp’s history!
For all these campers that found shelter in our grounds over the years.
For all these campers that our Camp holds a special place in their hearts.
For all the campers that watch us from heaven and wonder, how come we haven’t start rebuilding yet.
We will make sure of it, for all the children that cried their eyes out when they saw the aftermath of this natural disaster and are wondering if they will return next year.
We invite you to stand with us in preserving the legacy of our summer camp in Pelion as it reaches this historic milestone.
To all YMCA campers regardless of their age, we invite you to join us in honoring the past and securing its vibrant future! So that we all meet again around the campfire and sing our songs.
The past 2 months were unfortunately necessary to measure, estimate, study, and plan.
Now we are ready!
This fundraising campaign is a call to bring us together, to summon the strength within, and to rebuild this heaven of hopes and memories! We should all donate for the cause of rebuilding and restoring our beloved camp.
Every donation, no matter the size, will be a testament of a strong partnership and shared values. Each € is a brushstroke, helping us paint a new chapter in the history of our beloved camp!
The road ahead is challenging, but we face it with unwavering determination and hope!
Together, we will restore our camp to its former glory, creating a heaven for future generations!
