Ceramics Workshop
2024-2025
Workshop for Adults
The classes are held in the ceramics workshop of the central building of YMCA Thessaloniki, where the entire process of firing in a kiln and glazing ceramics is followed. Each participant works on a manual wheel.
Ceramics is an ancient art with deep roots in human history and culture. From the moment humans discovered they could shape clay and fire it to create vessels and objects, ceramics evolved into a complex and refined art form. Today, ceramics classes offer a unique opportunity for students to explore their creativity, learn new techniques, and express themselves through clay.
Ceramics classes typically begin with an introduction to basic tools and materials. Clay is the primary material, and students will learn about different types of clay and their properties. They will also become acquainted with essential tools used for shaping and decorating ceramic objects, such as pottery wheels, spatulas, and rollers.
During the classes, students will have the opportunity to practice basic techniques such as:
- Handbuilding: This technique involves creating ceramic objects with the hands, without the use of a wheel. Students will learn how to shape and join pieces to create various forms.
- Wheel Throwing: The pottery wheel is one of the most iconic tools in this art. Students will learn how to center clay on the wheel, shape it, and create symmetrical objects such as mugs and bowls.
- Decoration: Decorating ceramic objects can be done using various techniques, such as carving and painting with glazes.
- Glazing: Application of glazes. Students will learn how to use and apply glazes to add unique patterns and textures to their works.
One of the most critical stages in ceramics is firing the objects. Students will be informed about the kiln firing method and how temperature and firing duration affect the final product.
Workshop and Practice
Most ceramics classes include ample workshop time, allowing students to practice their new skills. This time is invaluable as it enables students to experiment, create, and correct their mistakes in a supportive environment.
Benefits of Ceramics
Ceramics offers many benefits beyond acquiring artistic skills. It is a form of expression that can serve as a therapeutic tool, helping to reduce stress and develop concentration and patience. Additionally, ceramics provides a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction as students see their creations take shape and become functional or decorative objects.
Ceramics classes are an excellent opportunity for people of all ages to explore art and creativity. Whether someone is a beginner or has prior experience, ceramics offers endless possibilities for personal and artistic development. With patience, practice, and imagination, every student can create beautiful and unique ceramic works of art.
