Puppet Theater Performances by Christina and Litsa Bitiou

2024-2025

Welcome to the YMCA Thessaloniki theater.

The Puppet Theater at YMCA Thessaloniki opens its doors for the 22nd year, welcoming both young and old friends to its hilarious performances based on folk and classic fairy tales. Puppeteer Christina Bitiou, with her theatrical puppets (70 cm rod puppets and 1-meter marionettes), awaits you at the ΧΑΝΘ theater to take you on dreamy journeys.

Children quickly fall in love with puppet theater, and after watching our performances, they become very familiar with the puppets. Parents tell us how freely their children learn to express themselves, improvise, and mimic the puppet by giving it appropriate movements and speaking in accordance with the roles being played, allowing them to express their own emotions. With the animation of the puppet within the puppet theater, the child experiences both the imaginary and the real, creating a sense of magic. It becomes a realization of their dreams and a merging of their situations with those of the puppet.

It may sound strange, but bringing a puppet into the midst of all the difficult situations surrounding us seems almost ridiculous. It makes people laugh, not in the traditional sense of audience enjoyment, but mostly because the puppet is so weak. And all around us, this weakness is the real strength of the puppet. Because it embodies that “defiance of all,” without which humanity would have long since disappeared.

Our Puppet Theater Activities:

Performances and educational programs are aimed at preschool and school-age children. Children visiting the puppet theater at YMCA Thessaloniki not only can watch performances using various puppet theater techniques but also get closer to art by visiting the space.

School visits to our puppet theater are also available, as well as performances in kindergartens and preschools with quality entertainment programs for the art of puppet theater. Materials, stages, and methods of making hand puppets unfold before their eyes. Through educational activities, children learn how puppets are created, how they come to life, and how they communicate.

A magical journey into the world of puppetry that ends with a surprise: Each child, with the puppet they made, can improvise behind the small puppet theater stage.

Ticket Price: €7 (General Admission)

For schools & groups, performances are available upon request at the YMCA Thessaloniki phone numbers: 231 600 1000 and 6936985171 (Ms. Litsa Bitiou) www.puppetry.gr
