History and Achievements
YMCA Thessaloniki has a long and glorious history in handball, with significant achievements and successes that have highlighted the importance of the sport within the organization.
YMCA Thessaloniki became interested in handball almost immediately after the recognition of the Hellenic Handball Federation. The first mention of creating a team was at the YMCA Thessaloniki branch in Kalamaria on May 31, 1979. YMCA Thessaloniki officially became a member of the Federation in the spring of 1980.
The 1985-86 season was pivotal for the team, as it emerged as the champion of the 2nd group of the B’ National League, marking promotion to the A’ National League and establishing a foundation for the team’s future development.
Development and Achievements
True to the club’s philosophy, the handball department has focused on developing its infrastructure, which significantly grew from 1990 with the initiation of handball tournaments for municipal schools in Kalamaria. These tournaments served as an excellent system for attracting and selecting new young players for handball. They supplied numerous selected athletes in younger age groups, highlighted emerging talents with the greatest of all being Alexis Albanos, and brought significant success to the department.
In the 2004-2005 season, YMCA Thessaloniki became the Greek champion in the unified A2 League, with 11 international players in its ranks—6 in the Youth National Team and 5 in the Junior National Team.
Since then, except for 4 seasons, the team has been established in the A1 National League (now known as Handball Premier), primarily with players developed through its own system. The team has 3 titles as Greek Youth Champion (2004, 2005, and 2008).
The handball team of YMCA Thessaloniki has participated in 37 final phases of the Greek championships for Youth and Cadets, winning 14 medals: 3 gold, 8 silver, and 3 bronze. In the Greek Evaluation of the Hellenic Handball Federation, this performance ranks YMCA Thessaloniki 4th in Greece among approximately 150 clubs, behind Filathlitikos Verias, Doukas, and Ionikos N.F.
The men’s team of YMCA Thessaloniki competes in the A1 (Handball Premier) National League.
