Women’s Basketball

In 2019, we celebrated 100 years since the official introduction of basketball in Thessaloniki and Greece. This milestone is marked by a historic photo from that year showing YMCA Thessaloniki staff practicing the new sport using an inverted wooden chair as a hoop.

In 1919, the foundation for the basketball department of YMCA Thessaloniki was laid on a basketball court made of dirt near the White Tower. This court was the heart of basketball in Thessaloniki, where the first basketball championship was organized. YMCA Thessaloniki secured second place behind Aris, with Mimis Tsikinas, who was also the coach, as a key player.

YMCA Thessaloniki has won two Greek Youth Basketball Championships in 1970 and 1971 and two Greek Children’s Basketball Championships in 1969 and 1971.

Throughout its history, the basketball department of YMCA Thessaloniki has produced many significant figures in the sport and athletics in general. Many of its athletes have represented our national teams.

Our academy aims to develop body, mind, and spirit equally. Through continuous training and education, we maintain an academy that fosters a unique relationship with our competitive teams.

Our teams (pre-children, children, and youth) excel in their respective categories in the championships of the Association of Basketball Clubs of Thessaloniki.

Our women’s team competes in the A2 National League.
