“Effective Parenting” – Parent Education for Adults 2024-2025

2024-2025

Start of cycle Monday, October 14, 2024

The “Effective Parenting” training is designed for anyone interested in developing and enhancing a meaningful and effective relationship with their children.

It is possible to build a cordial and effective relationship between parent and child. Love is a prerequisite and it exists. However, parents need to focus on acquiring specific communication skills. They should be trained in how to develop a two-way communication and relationship of trust with their child, through which they can support their child’s healthy psychological development.

For instance, adolescence is not necessarily a period of tensions and conflicts but reflects the way parents choose to raise their child during childhood, which usually leads to conflicts and tensions.

In summary, what our main caregiver, usually our mother, did is recorded like a “tape” that is unconscious. When a person becomes a parent and starts raising their own child, this tape usually starts functioning in a similar way, often unconsciously. Thus, behaviors and mistakes made by our parents are often reproduced, which can sometimes leave marks on the child’s soul and later adult life, despite the best intentions on behalf of the parents.

It is also important for parents to know that during childhood, a child is particularly vulnerable to criticism, verbal abuse, emotional neglect, etc. The child relies on the parents because it does not have a strong sense of self and completely trusts what they are told. The child bases its self-perception and develops its self-image through what is said primarily by the parents but also by others. For example, if parents were not attentive to the child’s emotions, the informal message was that their feelings (and therefore they themselves) do not matter. Moreover, when criticism, verbal abuse, emotional neglect, etc., are chronic, the child tends to internalize them as an internal critical voice and makes them their own. Usually, this continues into adult life, repeating these negative false beliefs about oneself (e.g., I am ugly, I am stupid, it is my fault, I am useless, etc.).

Research has proven that the parent-child relationship appears to be decisive. This workshop trains parents in important and necessary communication skills for children and more, e.g., Active Listening. In summary, this training can first help the parent by gaining greater awareness and confidence in the parenting role and subsequently help their child. It lays the foundation for parents to build a daily life (which ultimately becomes a whole life) with a proven effective way and effectively communicated love!

Today, we often tend to operate in the “unnatural,” i.e., not having a good relationship with our closest people while having good relationships with people we rarely see or strangers we meet briefly in our lives. We have lost the ability to operate in the “natural.” To have a substantial, deep, helpful, cordial relationship with our closest ones. This needs to be and can be restored. It requires both learning and practicing skills, but the result is a relationship of substance, closely bound with trust, mutual understanding, and respect.

This workshop was first introduced in 1962 by clinical psychologist Dr. Thomas Gordon, who was nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize for his scientific contribution. It is also internationally recognized as the best parent training based on communication skills. The success of the training is primarily due to the experiential learning of these skills, which bring immediate, real, and recognizable results in the daily parent-child relationship.

The workshop has been taught to over one million parents in 43 countries, and the related book “Parent Effectiveness Training” has sold over 4 million copies in 33 languages.

In the seminar, participants are trained in topics such as:

  • How to actively listen to my child so I can help them when they face a problem
  • How to facilitate my child in solving their problems effectively, without needing to find all the solutions as a parent
  • How to connect cordially with my child with empathy, so their true feelings and talents, which are likely to surprise pleasantly, are revealed
  • How to set boundaries without jeopardizing my relationship with them
  • How to find ways to collaborate with my child to resolve conflicts using prevention skills
  • How to communicate with my child to encourage them to discuss their problems rather than hide them
  • How to encourage them to recognize and express their feelings, giving the child the opportunity to develop their emotional intelligence
  • How to help the child develop their self-esteem

No personal data disclosure is required in this training, and upon completion, a Certificate of Attendance is provided.

After completing the workshop, a participation certificate is issued.

Comments from Training Attendees:

“The Effective Parenting training is the best gift I have given to myself and my family. The ‘secrets’ I learned helped and continue to help me have a meaningful and healthy relationship with my family, based on empathy, a positive attitude, and authenticity.” – Mrs. Matina Giannakou

“Attending the Effective Parenting seminar with Ms. Mylonas, I discovered a different language of communication with my children (8 & 6 years old). I feel proud and safe when they confide their personal problems to me. I realized that by listening actively rather than manipulatively, I am very happy they show me trust, and they feel relieved! As for their problems… I am sure they will find the best solution on their own!” – Mrs. Maria Papoulidou

“The EP training was one of the best reasons to turn inward, not just as a mother, and to identify those elements that prevented me from standing beside my children with complete acceptance, to give them the space and time they need to be their unique, free selves (and to remember with them how to be myself again). Ms. Mylonas is not just a trainer. She embodies the principles of this training, making it understandable and accessible to all participants who certainly gain enormous benefits from completing it. I am glad I decided to attend the program and feel happy that I had the charismatic Ms. Mylonas as my trainer. It was a gift both for me and my children.” – Mrs. Stavroula Giannopoulou

“I would describe the EP training as a groundbreaking journey into my inner world, which resulted in equipping me to improve and develop my skills not only with children but also with adults.” – Mr. George Chatzipentelis
