SCHOOL VISITS
“Customs and Traditions of Greece through Traditional Dance and Song”
(Grades 2 to 5)

The program aims to introduce children to the customs and traditions of previous generations. They learn about different versions of the same tradition from various regions of Greece and explore all its aspects (song, dance, costume). In the end, through their own revival of the tradition, children come closer to the past by presenting it through their own experiences. For the 2024-2025 period, the chosen tradition is Ayios Ioannis (St. John) or Klidona or Theresitis, celebrated annually in various parts of Greece on June 24.

TRADITIONAL DANCE SEMINAR

“Vlach Dances and Songs with Origins from Grammosta and Moschopolis”
(November 2024)

Learning traditional dances and songs from experts specializing in these specific regions, accompanied by traditional musical ensembles. More information – registrations starting September.

More Information about the Folklore Dance Group

Throughout its long history, the Group has performed at local and international events. Whether as a guest organization or as an organizer, it has always left the best impressions and thrilled audiences. It has participated in events organized by the Municipality of Thessaloniki, other regional municipalities, and significant cultural organizations of the city. The Group has also been part of International Folklore Festivals in Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Sardinia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, and the USA. Collaboration with other cultural organizations and societies in Greece continues to be a primary goal. Experienced teachers in the Group enthusiastically teach dances from every region of Greece. Teaching and research around the musical and dance tradition are complemented by the authenticity of local folk musicians who accompany the dances in events both within and outside Greece.

YMCA Thessaloniki’s Folklore Dance Group includes numerous dancers from various regions of Greece and abroad. Their aim is to understand Greek musical and dance traditions through their multifaceted dynamics (songs, rhythms, dances, customs), to express themselves through traditional dance, to interact with their fellow dancers, and to gain benefits from mild exercise. At the same time, preserving the rich musical and dance tradition and passing it on to the new generation is the driving force of the Group, serving as a space for expression and the meeting of old with new. Traditional rhythms, songs, and the choreographic patterns of Greek dances offer strong sensations of group spirit, joy, enthusiasm, and well-being.

The members are distinguished by their voluntary willingness to participate in all Group events and to support YMCA Thessaloniki’s social initiatives, “…since each of us is happy to contribute so that others can enjoy along with us.”
