Judo

Judo (Japanese: 柔道, meaning “gentle way”) is a system of physical, mental, and moral education created in the 19th century by Jigoro Kano. As a sport and martial art, Judo is a form of wrestling that focuses on studying the opponent’s movement and utilizing the athlete’s strength.

Judo first appeared in Thessaloniki in 1974, during a demonstration by a group of five people at the YMCA gym.

The YMCA Thessaloniki Judo team was the first to be established in Northern Greece, and today it carries a proud history of champions and athletes who have been part of national teams.

The goal of the YMCA Thessaloniki Judo Academy is to teach the secrets of the sport, the proper use of energy, and to encourage our athletes in self-discipline and boost their self-confidence.

Our experienced coaches, with passion and dedication, successfully initiate children into the philosophy of Japanese Kodokan Judo, which is the correct name for Judo.

Coach: Manolis Savvidis

The YMCA Thessaloniki Judo department mainly focuses on development, aiming to teach the sport.
