School Visits

As part of its activities, YMCA Thessaloniki has designed school visit programs aimed at students from Elementary, Middle, and High Schools.

1.Cultures of Ancient Greece and Ceramic Art

YMCA Thessaloniki has developed a school visit program for elementary students with the theme: “CULTURES OF ANCIENT GREECE AND CERAMIC ART.”

The goal of the program is to introduce children to the culture and art of significant periods in ancient Greek history, as well as experiential exploration of ceramics, one of the oldest forms of art.

The program is aimed at elementary students in the following classes:

  • The Minotaur and the Palace of Knossos, Grades 1, 2, 3
  • Cycladic Civilization 3,200-2,000 BC, Grades 1, 2
  • Cycladic Civilization 3,200-2,000 BC, with references to Picasso and his works influenced by the Minoan-Mycenaean world and Mediterranean civilizations, Grades 3, 4, 5, 6
  • Minoan and Mycenaean Civilization 1,600-1,100 BC, Grades 3 & 4
  • The Classical Era of Ancient Greece and the Parthenon 490-323 BC, Grades 5, 6 & Middle School
  •

Each thematic unit lasts 2 hours (120 minutes) and the educational program is divided into two parts.

Play-Learning: The first part includes an introduction to the characteristics of each civilization through playful methods, such as interactive games, visual arts activities like collages, painting, and creating a poster that each class will take with them, as well as a presentation of visual material via video projection. For the Parthenon and Classical Era unit, there is an online tour of the Acropolis Museum through the Google Art Project.

Ceramics Workshop: The second part is dedicated to ceramics, where all children, guided by the instructor, will have the opportunity to shape and take home a clay object. They will discover the art of ceramics by creating small replicas of forms and decorative items inspired by the wealth of archaeological finds, such as Cycladic figurines, decorative images from vessels, and patterns from ancient Greek architecture.
